CIA Gemma Julià
I founded the company in 2008 under the name Cia La Prodigiosa, a commitment to my own projects, to the theater that I like to do the most: contemporary, creative and engaged. After preparing the website, I changed the name to Cia Gemma Julià and kept La Prodigiosa as the production company.
To date, the company has created and performed six text shows for adult audiences in two quite distinct lines.
On the one hand, the shows that I have started abased on a very personal motivation, in which I have surrounded myself with a team of professionals and in the creative field I have worked as an author and actress.
The latest production in this line is the monologue Les claus a la mà (Keys in hand), premiered in June 2023 at the Teatre Municipal de Canet de Mar, which I also co-directed. Currently on tour.
The two previous shows are Equilibris (Balance) -written based on my experience of fostering a child and premiered in 2017- and Inventari d’objectes perduts i altres (Inventory of lost and found objects) -created under the umbrella of Projecte Vaca and premiered in 2009-.
The second line of work differs from the first because the actors and actresses are not professionals and I take charge of the Direction and Dramaturgy of the shows.
After the impact of fostering a child as well as writing and performing Equilibris, I saw very clearly that fostering needed to become known as a measure of protection for childhood. And what better way to do it than through the testimonies of the host families themselves?
The Let’s create cultures around fostering project was born in 2016, after obtaining a grant from La Caixa (Art for Change), the support of the Red Cross of Barcelona and AFABAR (Assoc. of fostering families of Barcelona).
The first show was Compartint famílies in 2017. Then came Heroïnes in 2020 and Teixint vincles in 2022, which received the support of the Catalan Institute for Fostering and Adoption. To facilitate the production of Teixint Vincles, the foster families association Acollint la diversitat was created. A total of 30 performances have been held and hace been attended by 2,427 people.
The three shows were collective creations from theater workshops, that is, along the lines of social or documentary theater and with a dual objective. On the one hand, to provide support, recognition and a recreational and therapeutic meeting space for foster families. And just as important, or even more important, to create awareness about minors under guardianship. Our motto was “No child without a family”.
My company, an adventure that continues and that would not have been possible without all my colleagues from the Projecte Vaca Association, professionals, alumni, friends and family members who have supported me. Thank you to everyone and also to the cultural centers who have supported my work!
